Right time to introduce solids to your baby

Topic: Right time to introduce solids to your baby

The perfect time to  switch from liquid diet to solid food is when your baby starts to sit and stops swallowing directly with the help of his tongue. This is when he is around 4 to 6 months old, before that his requirements are fulfilled by the milk you give him. For the food I suggest you should start from blended or pureed potatoes in milk, a mashed banana, or any other cereals but that should be digestible for the baby and not too heavy for his little stomach. And finally Goodluck with your baby's first foods!

Re: Right time to introduce solids to your baby

Complementary feeding usually is best started at 6 months old. Introducing solid foods to babies should be given with the rule of: one type of food at a time. It is not advisable to mix everything in a single plate, and the reason is simple to know the child's preferences and whether or not he or she is allergic to a particular type of food.

What I usually do is to introduce mashed foods first like mashed potatoes, mashed squash, mashed bananas, etc., and slowly turn to giving semi-solid foods, and then later on to solid foods. This is appropriate as to not overwhelm the child as well.

Re: Right time to introduce solids to your baby

My nice is breastfeeding her 3-month-old baby but her baby requires more milk than she can give him. She already tested everything possible teas, massage ... and

nothing helps. She wants to start feeding the baby with solid foods, isn´t it too early? Does anybody have experience with it?

Ella as I mentioned the perfect time to start solids is when the baby starts sitting, not before that because her tiny stomach will then be able to digest food easily. You can give him formula milk along with breast feeding.

Giving solids at age 3 months may cause aspiration. This can be very dangerous since babies those age can't chew yet. You can start complementing breastmilk with formula milk if it's nearly impossible to produce breastmilk. HOWEVER, one way to stimulate production of breastmilk is through constant suckling on the nipples of the mother by the baby and eating gallactogenic foods such as green leafy vegetables.

Re: Right time to introduce solids to your baby

I was advised by my pediatrician that giving solid foods to my baby should start at 6 months which I followed and be sure that my baby has a good head and neck control and should be able to sit up in a high chair.
I started giving him mashed fruits or vegetables (started with mashed potato, then mashed carrots, then mashed banana and so on..) one at a time for him to taste what is good.
I prefer natural ones than ready to eat cereals. We showed him how to chew and he watched so intently as he imitates it.
Most of the time if baby is not accustomed to the taste, their face look so funny and adorable and he would spit all of it.
I don't mind at all since you cannot force your baby eating solids right away.
Gradually, he got accustomed in eating solids but still breastfeeding is still his food of choice.
